Solar Eclipse 2026: Ibiza and the Balearic Islands at the Forefront
By Jacqueline Chelliah06 août 2026
On August 12, the Sun will disappear for a few dozen seconds as it is obscured by the Moon. A rare celestial event, the total solar eclipse will be visible in Europe only along a very narrow path crossing Spain and the Balearic Islands. For hoteliers across the archipelago, this brief astronomical spectacle has become a major economic opportunity.
In Formentera, Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca, several five-star hotels have created packages entirely dedicated to the event. Far more than simply offering a viewing location, they are now marketing an immersive experience in which astronomy becomes the gateway to wellness, culinary and spiritual retreats.
The offering at Teranka Formentera perfectly illustrates this emerging trend. The 35-room property is offering a €180 package that includes a sound meditation session, a cocktail, a talk on eclipse mythology, rooftop viewing of the phenomenon and a gourmet dinner. Guests can also extend the experience with a three-night retreat featuring massages, paddleboarding, ice baths and ceramic workshops, with rooms starting at €1,400 per night.

In Ibiza, the Six Senses hotel is taking a more spiritual approach. Called Cosmic Alignment, its four-day programme combines sunrise yoga, breathwork, sound therapy, talks exploring astrology and mythology, as well as a series of collective rituals designed to accompany the moment.
A Business Benefiting an Entire Ecosystem
In Mallorca, the move towards luxury is even more pronounced. The Mandarin Oriental Punta Negra invites guests to choose their preferred viewing location: a private yacht, helicopter or even a hot-air balloon, combined with exclusive culinary experiences. Prices are not publicly disclosed, reflecting the property’s focus on an ultra-high-end international clientele.
The Jumeirah Mallorca is opting for a full four-day festival experience: astronomy classes led by island specialists, telescope observations, sea excursions, dinners among the olive groves and an eclipse cocktail, together with a live commentary from astronomers during the event.
In Menorca, Vestige Son Ermità is offering a minimum three-night stay that includes a special dinner and privileged access to a viewing point at the heart of an 800-hectare natural estate.
Beyond the hotels, an entire ecosystem is benefiting from this unexpected windfall. Catamaran companies are organising special trips to watch the eclipse at sea, agencies are offering private cruises, and some operators are even marketing yacht experiences featuring live music and gourmet dining.
A Strategy Built Around Eclipse Chasing
This strategy responds to a rapidly growing international demand. For several months, travellers specialising in “eclipse chasing” — enthusiasts who journey around the world to witness total solar eclipses — have been booking their stays well in advance. The Balearic Islands offer a rare advantage: the eclipse will occur just minutes before sunset, creating a spectacular display over the Mediterranean horizon.
For luxury properties, the goal is therefore no longer simply to sell a room, but to offer a once-in-a-lifetime event that cannot be replicated for several decades. A few dozen seconds of celestial wonder have become the centrepiece of stays costing several thousand of euros, transforming an astronomical phenomenon into a high end tourism experience.
Key points:
- A rare phenomenon attracts travelers from around the world: the total solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, will be visible in Europe only from a limited area of Spain and the Balearic Islands.
- Luxury is turning the eclipse into a premium experience: hotels and agencies are offering stays combining astronomy, wellness, gastronomy, and exclusive activities.
- The event is becoming a major economic opportunity: “eclipse chasing” is boosting an entire tourism ecosystem, from hotels to private cruises.
