Does New York Still Know How to Seduce Luxury?

Aymeric Mantoux

Between the Upper East Side and Soho, Manhattan has redrawn the boundaries of luxury. With recent openings and the exodus of galleries to the Lower East Side, the Big Apple proves that “brick-and-mortar” isn’t dead: it’s just become more exclusive, more artistic, and radically experiential.

New York is not static. The city never sleeps—that’s a cliché. But it never stops evolving either; it’s a reality you see firsthand as you walk its streets and neighborhoods. Even when you think you know it by heart, it always finds a way to reinvent itself, to revitalize a legendary spot, or to highlight a micro-neighborhood that has long remained off the radar. Especially with the World Cup approaching and the upcoming celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States.

While some predicted Manhattan’s post-pandemic decline, the city is treating itself to a high-end facelift. Forget the clichés; the new geography of New York luxury is indeed full of paradoxes and more fluid than before, less segmented. Without completely abandoning Fifth Avenue, luxury has reclaimed its territory in Soho and near the old warehouses of Tribeca, where even Hermès has chosen to set up shop, two blocks from the Whitney Museum.

Soho: the Return of the Ultra-Exclusive

This spring’s seismic shift? The arrival of Marc-Antoine Barrois at 120 Wooster Street. The Parisian fashion designer-perfumer, whose fragrances like Ganymede have become the new social markers of the intelligentsia, didn’t just open a boutique (his first abroad). He created a manifesto. In a space designed with his collaborator Antoine Bouillot, Barrois advocates IRL (in real life) against the tyranny of algorithms. It’s spacious, it’s dreamlike, and it’s precisely what the New York client is looking for: an experience the web cannot replicate. The French designer has filled this poetic space with works of art and sculptures, where he showcases his scents—which rank among the world’s best-selling niche perfumes—before soon offering his shirts and tuxedos there as well.

In New York, Swiss watchmaker Longines is writing a new chapter with the opening of its second boutique—this time in the heart of Soho. This 100-square-meter space combines the brand’s nearly two-century-old heritage with the architectural soul of Soho, blending brick walls, wooden floors, and cast-iron details. Inside, the timepieces are displayed amidst subtle references to Longines’ historical ties to equestrian sports, aviation, and alpine skiing, while the signature three-dimensional hourglass motif adds a touch of modernity and distinction.

Soho is also where the lab-grown diamond house Jean Dousset has laid its sights for the opening of its second boutique—its very first on the East Coast. Designed to evoke the intimate elegance of a Parisian mansion, the Soho showroom blends Haussmann-style moldings, gilded mirrors, and soft lighting in a space that is both heritage-inspired and modern. Inside, visitors can explore the brand’s entire collection—from engagement rings to diamond stud earrings, wedding bands, and high-jewelry cuffs. Ring Concierge has also officially set up shop in Soho with a boutique spanning nearly 185 square meters, blending modern romance and trendy urban style in equal measure. Founded in 2013 by Nicole Wegman, this cult brand has built its success by shaking up the conventions of diamond shopping through transparency, personalization, and effortless luxury—and this new space is a dazzling embodiment of that vision. Featuring the brand’s very first ready-to-wear engagement ring collection as well as its entire jewelry line, the boutique blends the world of bespoke weddings with everyday family heirlooms.

Nearby, the Mercer, a quintessentially “quiet luxury” hotel, has been completely renovated. Sartiano, its Italian restaurant in the basement, is always packed, and people would walk across Manhattan in the rain just to taste its pasta. After dinner, the socialites gather at (Sub) Mercer, located between the hotel and the Bape store. Soho is definitely still holding its own.
