Thailand has unveiled an ambitious plan to build a large-scale, $3 billion entertainment complex to boost tourism and drive economic growth. The project that will be funded through private investments and could be set up in Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai or Phuket.

Tourism plays a key role in Thailand's economy, contributing about 9% to 12% to its GDP and supporting approximately 20% of the jobs in the country. Local and international tourist spending in Thailand exceeded $80 billion (Thai Baht 2.6 trillion) in 2024, according to a World Bank report. The new entertainment complex could boost the country’s GDP by up to 0.8%, annually and triple average tourist spending while creating thousands of new jobs, according to the Thai government projections. It could generate annual revenue between $369 million to $1.2 billion (THB 12.04 billion to 39.25 billion) through taxes alone.

The entertainment complex will offer attractions all year round to increase tourist inflow even during slow tourism months. Weather-proof indoor stadiums, exhibition centres, luxury shopping and fine-dine restaurants are expected to drive consistent footfall and support the targeted growth.

A major draw of the proposed complex could be the tightly regulated Casino operations, a first for Thailand. Gambling was largely illegal in Thailand up until earlier this year, when Thai Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s cabinet approved a bill legalising gambling and casinos to boost tourism in the south-east Asian country. The government plans to limit the access to the upcoming casino with stringent security and anti-money laundering laws.

The Thai government aims to model the entire project around similar integrated complexes in Singapore, South Korea and Macau. For instance, in Singapore the integrated resort revenue in 2022 reached about $13 billion, while Macau and South Korea generated approximately $36 billion and $9.8 billion in revenues the same year.

According to Thai media reports, the local government has already received interest in this project from popular casino brands such as Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts. With the new entertainment complex, Thailand hopes to become the third largest entertainment destination in the world behind Las Vegas and Macau within the next ten years.
