Rolex: At the Heart of the Skills Factory

For a long time, Rolex has cultivated discretion around its industrial sites, which very few have been able to enter, as well as its Training Center (CFR) in Geneva. Yet, on August 28th, on the occasion of celebrating its graduating apprentices, the brand opened the doors of its skill center to a select few journalists, including Luxury Tribune.

Behind the walls of the Rolex Training Center, located on the 3rd floor of an understated and functional building not far from the brand's Geneva headquarters, lies a facility of rare scale: 26 apprenticeship trades, 446 apprentices in training in 2026, and a stated goal of 500 apprentices by 2030 as part of the "Project 500."

Luxury Tribune was one of the few media outlets invited to visit these facilities, which, since 2018, have brought together all of Rolex's vocational and continuous training activities in Switzerland (Geneva, Bienne, and soon Fribourg) across approximately 12,000 m² (across the three sites). This invitation served a dual purpose: to open the doors of the applied training system at the heart of Rolex and to demonstrate the true strategic lever it represents for perpetuating Rolex’s expertise, as well as for the entire sector. The pool of apprentices trained here each year is the largest in the industry.

The most striking proof of the system's level of excellence—confirmed by the special attention paid to it by the Confederation—was presented to us in the middle of the afternoon during the graduation ceremony. Gathered in Rolex’s large reception hall in Les Acacias, the 89 graduates waited patiently for their turn. On stage were three prominent figures: Jean-Frédéric Dufour, CEO of Rolex, Guy Parmelin, President of the Confederation and Anne Hiltpold the President of the Geneva Government. Together, they presented each recipient with a diploma and a white scarf embroidered with their name. It was a rare honor that the graduates could barely wrap their heads around, serving as a reminder that Rolex’s excellence does not rely solely on its products, but first and foremost on the men and women who craft them.
The extraordinary presence of the President of the Confederation at this graduation ceremony also highlights the special attention Switzerland pays to vocational training—and by extension to Rolex, an employer of more than 10,000 people in Switzerland. Its training center embodies the Swiss dual-education model. It trains apprentices in 26 trades across watchmaking, mechanics, manufacturing, and services, offering multi-year structured paths that blend inter-company courses, production internships, and practical projects on real components and movements.
In his speech, Guy Parmelin made this the core of his message, recalling on a more personal note that his own journey had also led him to choose dual vocational training—starting with an agricultural apprenticeship, followed by a cantonal and then federal agricultural diploma specializing in viticulture. Before entering the government, the President of the Confederation worked as a winegrower, co-owning an estate with his brother in the canton of Vaud. This unique Swiss feature, which places no barriers on reaching the highest levels, relies on the flexibility of the educational system and the availability of bridges between training pathways.

An Industrial-Scale Training Structure

Rolex’s strength in training stems primarily from the fact that education is approached as an industrial imperative. With annual production estimated at around 1.15 million timepieces (according to the Ninth Annual Swiss Watcher report by Morgan Stanley in collaboration with LuxConsult), human and industrial resources—backed by a robust educational framework—are essential to sustain innovation and expertise over time. Within Rolex, over a hundred distinct professions contribute to creating timepieces designed to last.
At the CFR (Training Center), learning happens "as close to the floor as possible, inside the workshops, along the manufacturing lines, and across administrative departments," highlights Fabien Graber, head of the training center. This constant synergy between pedagogy and industrial reality sets Rolex’s framework apart from more traditional academic setups.
"Project 500," launched in 2022, serves as the most prominent example of this strategy. Its goal is to train 500 apprentices by 2030. "Their numbers have already more than doubled. Today, 446 apprentices are training at Rolex within an offering that has expanded significantly—from 15 to 26 trades," specifies Fabien Graber.

From the moment one enters the dedicated training site, the sleek visual identity conforming to Rolex standards contrasts sharply with the world outside. The space opens into a suite of bright, spacious offices, followed by specialized units organized by trade and partitioned by transparent glass walls. In the mechanical, polymechanical, and production engineering workshops, apprentices describe a hands-on routine: reading blueprints, programming CNC machines, tooling, and manufacturing prototype parts. The array of multi-axis machinery integrated directly into the department reflects the exceptional caliber of the training infrastructure—featuring CNC equipment that many brands would dream of using for production, let alone for instruction. The scale of Rolex is measured here by the vast resources made available.
