Inside the Orange Box: A Lifetime of Collecting: This online auction by Christie’s has broken the record of a single owner Hermès collection. The sale came to a total of 1’527’372 euros for Part II, bringing the combined total following part I in June of this year at 3’882’175 euros. The second part of the sale attracted global participation with bidders from 33 countries, across 5 continents, and achieved a sell-through rate of 99% by lot. 48% of new registrants were millennial collectors.

“Assembled over a lifetime by a passionate connoisseur of all things Hermès, the Orange Box is the largest single owner collection of Hermès handbags and lifestyle objects to ever appear at auction”, stated Lucile Andreani, Head of Handbags, Christie’s EMEA. A group of six Hermès jewels, comprising two 18k Chaine D’Ancre bracelets, three brooches and one pin, estimated at around 4’000 to 6’000 euros and achieveing 32’760 euros, were part of the top lots of the auction. Additionally, a 2006 Hermès orange veau doblis and calf box leather Birkin 25 with gold hardware, estimated between 6,000 to 8,000 euros, finally realised 30,240 euros.

“The sale continues a tremendous year for single owner Handbags collections at Christie’s” reported Rachel Koffsky, International Head of Handbags at Christie’s.  Indeed, a live auction took place in Paris earlier this year, entitled “Most Collectible Bags: An Important European Private Collection”. It represented the first Handbags & Accessories single owner sale in the history of the department, and the return of the department to the Christie’s Paris sale room, after a five-year hiatus.

Upcoming sales at Christie’s for the end of this year include “Handbags Online: The Paris Edit auction”, which will be live for bidding from 3 to 17 November 2022 and will include pieces from Hermès, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and many more. Additionally, “The Ann & Gordon Getty Collection” will be sold at Christie’s New York from 10 to 24 October 2022. Nearly 1,500 superlative works of decorative and fine arts will be offered by Christie’s from the couple’s San Francisco residence.
