John Galliano: The Reasons Why Fashion’s Controversial Genius Is Withdrawing

John Galliano has withdrawn from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s planned 2027 retrospective, “John Galliano: Horizons,” bringing one of fashion’s most controversial cultural debates to an end. The decision follows mounting criticism over his 2011 antisemitic and racist remarks, which led to his dismissal from Dior and a conviction by a French court.

Galliano said he remained “fully accountable” for the pain he had caused, particularly to Jewish and Asian communities. He stressed that genuine atonement could not be achieved through an exhibition or institutional recognition, but required continued responsibility through his actions.

The controversy intensified because the exhibition was scheduled to coincide with the 2027 Met Gala and the beginning of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Julie Menin, Speaker of the New York City Council and the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, publicly challenged the Met’s decision. She called honoring Galliano a “grave mistake” and urged the institution to reconsider, arguing that his record of antisemitism and racism could not be separated from his artistic legacy.

The pressure was also financial. According to The New York Times, some Met donors contacted museum executives and threatened to rescind their donations if the exhibition went ahead. The threat added a powerful new dimension to the controversy: the museum was not only facing public criticism, but potentially risking the financial support on which its programmes depend.

The backlash also raised questions about the judgment of Anna Wintour, a longtime supporter of Galliano. Yet after his withdrawal, Wintour described his decision as courageous, while Met director Max Hollein said the museum and Galliano had “together decided not to proceed” with the exhibition.

The episode exposes a deeper dilemma for fashion: can extraordinary artistic achievement be celebrated independently of serious personal wrongdoing? Galliano’s decade-long rehabilitation at Maison Margiela had suggested that redemption was possible. But the Met controversy demonstrates that forgiveness does not necessarily mean institutional absolution.

For Galliano, stepping aside is therefore more than a cancellation. It is an acknowledgement that, however influential his work may be, the wounds surrounding his past remain part of his legacy.
