The digital Sherlock Holmes of art
Art historians may have a new way of discovering the original artists behind disputed creations. Research conducted at Case Western Reserve University in the United States has resulted in a new Artificial Intelligence tool. It not only establishes the attribution of a work to its original creator, but also prevents fraud with an accuracy of 96%. The tool analyses sections of works as small as half a millimetre, examining the differences between brush works, to find the ‘fingerprint’ of each artist as he or she applies the paint.
