A Swiss library on UNESCO’s World Heritage List

The library of St. Gallen Abbey is still one of the most important and oldest monastic libraries in the world, making it the most important tourist attraction in Eastern Switzerland. It is the heir to the medieval monastery library built on the site of the hermit colony founded in 612. In 1767, the west wing of the monastery was rebuilt to its present baroque appearance. Today it is considered one of the most sumptuous library halls in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
